EC3 cut a promo announcing that he’s running the show tonight. Matt Hardy challenged EC3 to a World Title match, but EC3 refused and booked Matt in a handicap match against the Dirty Heels.
The Dirty Heels defeated Matt Hardy when Roode tripped Hardy’s feet as Aries pinned him for the win. Nice way to start the show. The promo was short and sweet, and Hardy looked strong in defeat. It looks like they planted the seeds for an eventual Hardy/EC3 match in the future. Mission accomplished.
Drew Galloway cut a promo announcing that the Rising has disbanded. Drew said he will continue to #StandUp for wrestling as Drake and Micah exited the ring. EC3 pretended to cry and then booked Drew in a three-on-one handicap match against The Revolution.
Drew Galloway defeated Manik, Abyss and Khoya when Drew pinned Manik with a running kick. While The Rising may be dead, Drew is certainly a rising star in my opinion. It's time for Drake and Micah to develop their own identities. As for the Revolution, those guys are hopeless. Maybe they’re the ones who need to #StandUp... for their careers.
Mr. Anderson beat Bram by DQ when Bram threw a chair at Anderson’s head. Bram called for Anderson’s microphone and used it to bash him in the head. Ouch, those were stiff shots by Bram. You have to appreciate his dedication to his character—he's just a nasty, violent SOB. 'Nuff said.
Jessie Godderz defeated Robbie E in a street fight when Robbie passed out to the Adonis Lock. Hooray for Jessie! Any bro can win a wrestling match. It takes a man—The Man—to win a street fight. Jessie has the arrogance and physicality to become a formidable heel. I love the way he screams when he applies the Adonis Lock; it's like he's torturing his opponent with his strength.
EC3 defeated Norv Fernum and Shark Boy in a gauntlet match to retain the TNA World Championship. Before EC3 could announce his next opponent, Kurt Angle exercised his rematch clause for tonight. Haha, only EC3 could pull off a sham like this. You know what they say: You're not a real champion until you defend your title. His reasons for picking his challengers were logical and amusing at the same time. Good stuff.
Lashley defeated Tyrus with a spear. Solid match. The Electric Chair was impressive. Lashley is such a powerhouse and his performances have been consistent all year. I guess Lashley will bounce around for a while until he finds a suitable feud.
Mike Tenay conducted a sit-down interview with Jeff and Karen Jarrett. Jeff talked about his legacy in TNA, his vision for GFW and the King of the Mountain Championship. He basically confirmed that there is a working relationship between TNA and GFW, and that the KOTM title will be an important part of GFW.
Velvet Sky defeated Madison Rayne with a stunner. Eh, it was a pretty straightforward match. Velvet's offense has improved slightly but still nothing to write home about. I get that she's trying to be a bad ass, but using the stunner is just awkward.
Kurt Angle beat EC3 by DQ when EC3 intentionally hit the referee while he was trapped in the Ankle Lock. Umm, that was a weird finish. Shouldn’t the original referee call for the DQ? And the other ref saw EC3 tap out, so why didn't he award Angle the title? Then again, it was very reminiscent of what Bobby Roode used to do when he was champ, so maybe that's the point.
EC3 introduced his Aunt Dixie for a promo. Dixie confronted EC3 about his attitude and talked about her past mistakes. She said someone needs to take control of the company and it's not going to be her or Ethan. Nice cliffhanger. I'm glad they used Dixie's return at the right moment. She's not going to support her nephew the way that he expected, which changes the dynamic of his title reign in the weeks to come.
Overall, this was a fun show. The theme of the night was obviously EC3's abuse of power, and I thought he was very entertaining in his role. I also enjoyed the street fight and the way they showcased Hardy, Galloway and Lashley as the next potential challengers. The follow-up to Dixie's little bombshell should be interesting.
